Walking in the Word
23 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?”
27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” Mark 10:23-27
Response to the Word
I used to always think of a camel going through the eye of literal needle. But that's not exactly what Jesus is saying here. The "needle" was a small door in the large gate of a fortified city. At night, the gate would be closed to keep out a possible invasion. The small door was there to let in residents and travelers seeking lodging. The only problem came when the traveler had a camel. He had to wrestle and coach that camel to kneel and creep through the small door and into the city. Rich people sometimes trust more in thier riches than in Jesus. It's a sad but common truth. But just when we think we're in a hopeless situation, Jesus has the power to help anyone who wants to put thier faith in Him, and not money.
Praying through the Word
Father, How I thank you and praise You for who You are and for the blessings you have given to me and my family. Lord, please keep my heart focused only on You and never on money or possesions. You are worthy of all my love, praise and adoration. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
